For several years now I have had contacts with
Classics scholars in Bulgaria. It began with my receiving publications dealing
with the ancient Greek and Roman world - bibliographies, books, journals,
individual articles and other materials - from the Acquisitions and Exchange
Department of the (now again SS.) Cyril and Methodius National Library in Sofia.
In exchange for English-language Classics publications I have enjoyed a regular
flow of Bulgarian scholarship in the field, from both the Library and individual
scholars. Now, I want to reciprocate further by providing some information,
albeit fragmentary and of an introductory nature, in English, about the work
done by Bulgarian Classicists since the end of World War II. I am therefore
including sections on Bulgaria among my CHOCEECS installments. I begin with a
list of scholars most of whom I assume are still alive and active in Bulgaria.
For each scholar I have tried to give some basic information – name, academic
title and rank, institutional address, and, under the "TRSW" designation, an
informal and admittedly unsystematic sampling of data concerning teaching and
research interests, and listings, though not in precise bibliographical formats,
about publications and other scholarly activities. Where such information is
incomplete or, occasionally, even rough in form (because my compilation is, of
necessity, a "work in progress"), I shall welcome any supplementary assistance I
can get from current Bulgarian Classicists. This initial list, I stress again,
is only a modest beginning of what I hope, with the continued and increased help
of current and obviously more knowledgeable Bulgarian colleagues, will steadily
grow and be updated, corrected, supplemented and, as appropriate, even
restructured. I basically want to indicate more extensively to English-speaking
Classicists how much truly outstanding work in every possible ramification of
Classical Studies contemporary Bulgarian Classical scholars have produced and
are producing. I therefore invite and encourage our Ancient Studies friends to
join and be in contact with me – either in Bulgarian, Russian, Polish, Czech, or
any West European language like French, German, Italian, English, Spanish or
Portuguese. I can be reached either at my e-mail address or at my regular postal
address: (Prof. Dr.) Chester F. Natunewicz, 2107 Teague Road, Houston, TX
77080-6409, USA). I look forward to hearing early and frequently from our
friends in the lands of Ancient Thrace and Moesia. I welcome all published
materials that shed additional light on the efforts continuing in Bulgaria and
elsewhere to demonstrate the continuing vitality, fascination, significance and
applicability of the Greco-Roman civilization to the present. Here follows my
