Book review - 'Cold Mountain' author retains N.C. setting in newest, 'Nightwoods'
His setting, however, is still the beautiful, brooding and haunting North Carolina mountains, and his subject is still the sometimes-bloody goings-on there.
The book's heroine is Luce (short for Lucinda), a 30-something loner who serves as part-caretaker, part-squatter at a long-shuttered lakeside mountain lodge. Once a playground for millionaires in the days of the railroad, the place is now abandoned, with more than an air of “The Shining.”
Luce likes it, though. The ex-owners left a large library behind, and she can pick up WLAC from Nashville (which played James Brown and classic bluesmen) with the lodge's enormous antique radio, with a tuning dial like the steering wheel on a Packard.
Luce has been fleeing the world. (We find out why, later.) The world, however, has caught up with her.
Her sister, Lily, was murdered by her worthless husband. Lily's two small children (from a previous marriage) watched the killing. Since their grandfather's dead and their grandmother, Lola, went AWOL when Luce and Lily were little, that means Luce is the only surviving relative.
