Russian Classicists

Home  Up  The State of Classics in Russia

The following represents an initial list of Classicists currently active in Russia, or presumed to be currently active. The list also includes educational administrators (e.g., deans, directors of broader academic units encompassing other areas of study besides the Classics). Based on information available to me (without reliable and updated published institutional staff directories and uneven data on the Internet) I have, for each scholar, tried to give the full name (surname, first name, patronymic), academic rank (e.g., Academician, Professor, Docent/Associate Professor, Senior Instructor, Lecturer, Assistant), academic title where rank is unavailable (e.g., Doctor of Philological Sciences, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Master), institutional affiliation with address (postal and, in some cases, e-mail as well), and teaching and research specialties/writings (TRSW), concentrating on general content rather than precise and standard bibliographical citations. As stated above, this list is intended to be only a starting point, and I shall refine and add much more to it in the future as I work my way through extensive amounts of raw data currently in my possession. Meanwhile, from others as well, I welcome additions, corrections, updates, comments and other appropriate supplementary information, all of which can be sent to the website’s e-mail address (Choceecs@aol.com) or by surface mail to: Chester F. Natunewicz, 2107 Teague Road, Houston, TX 77080-6409 USA. My purpose in this albeit fragmentary overview is to begin letting colleagues know which Classical scholars are currently teaching and doing research in Russia, so as to give an indication of the geographical and scientific dimensions of Classical study in that country today. In transliterating from the Russian into the English alphabet I have used, for the most part, standard renditions. For assisting me in compiling this list I am deeply indebted to a number of Russian scholars whom, over the years, I have either met personally or corresponded with. I hope to enjoy their continued collaboration .
